Episode title: The Soundtracks of Our Life
Today’s episode is the last in season two. We’ll be looking at The Magic “If” an acting tool that works so perfectly for parenting and life in general.
The Raise a Glass segment lyrics are “to your union and the hope that you provide, may you always be satisfied.” It’ll be the first personal toast to someone I love, my husband of nine years, Scott. May you toast to the significant person in your life that helps you hold it down and bring so much joy to your life, who ever they may be.
A Short Story Before We Go segment is an ode to Lin-Manuel Miranda, well more like a letter of thanks. I’ll share how the In the Heights and Hamilton musicals have greatly impacted my life at some of the most personal and significant turning points in my life.

Magic If:
- What is the magic if?
- A Stanislavksi system tool to help the actor connect with their character by imagining what they would do IF they were in the same situation as their character
- Nothing on the stage is real, and instead of using your imagination to try and by into that being the reality, use your imagination to understand how you personally would handle the choices the character is faced with
- It allows an actor to start with what they know, which is themselves. That is what we bring to each role and that is what makes each interpretation different from the next. It’s also what intrigues actors to explore the same character multiple times throughout their career. At each stage in our life how we would respond if we were in our characters shoes will change, because we change and evolve over time.
- Why it’s important
- To help the actor make choices and take actions
- How we can use it as parents
- Strengthening our imagination
- Putting ourselves in the shoes of another person keeps us
- Building empathy with our children
- Strengthening our imagination
- IF exercise
- Ways to practice using the magic if with children/family related issues at home
- Ways to practice using the magic if with the outside world
